It’s that time of year again, time to start thinking how best to maintain your landscape and if there are any changes and improvements that need to be made. 

A landscape spring clean-up can solve a few of those challenges for you. When most people think of a spring clean up they think of mulch. There is much more that goes into a properly executed spring clean-up. 

A proper spring clean-up should consist of the following (although all of these items may not apply to every landscape)

• Removal of leaves, sticks, and any other unwanted debris.
• Clean up of any perennials, grasses or roses that may not have been maintained properly in the past or at the right time. 
• Minor pruning of shrubbery, ornamental trees, and ground covers, that are not pruned in fall, can be performed. 
• All dead and/or damaged plant material should be removed to prevent the spread of insects and disease.
• Landscape beds and tree rings should be edged (we prefer spade edging by hand to get that crisp look.  
• A pre-emergent weed control application can be applied to all landscape beds, tree rings, and gravel areas, except where annual flowers will be planted for the future control of weeds. 
• Existing large weeds should be dug out and removed. Smaller weeds can be treated with a liquid post-emergent.
• A 1″ to 2″ layer of dark hardwood mulch should be applied, based on existing mulch thickness. 
• Pine straw can be used as well and offer a different look than mulch. 

Keep in mind these are just the main items that should accompany a quality spring clean up. Some other things we focus on is checking the health of the existing plants, and looking for signs of disease or insect infestation. Looking for signs of moles, chipmunks or other critters that may be damaging turf space or creating issues around the home or business.
